You’ll find rows of shops and first-class restaurants with a backdrop of sweeping views of Mount Etna. The whole town feels more modern compared to the medieval (中世纪的) winding roads and broken castles in the surrounding cities, but Taormina has breathtaking ruins to see as well. The Greek theater ruins are a must-see, and there is Greek-influenced architecture everywhere you look. Palermo Palermo is Sicily’s capital city, a historically important trade port that was taken over by many of the surrounding countries throughout history. You can look for the signs of Sicily’s past conquerors (占领者) in the present-day architecture. The Palermo Cathedral, with Romanesque, Baroque, Gothic and Modern influences, is a great example of competing architectural styles within one building. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, head to the Catacombs of the Capuchins, where 8000 dead bodies between the 17th and 19th centuries are on display. Mount Etna A trip to Sicily’s east coast wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Mount Etna. It looks extremely impressive from afar, but there are plenty of ways to enjoy Europe’s largest active volcano up-close as well. Take a cable-car to the top, explore the dramatic valleys and be amazed at the lava (熔岩) flows. In the winter, you can also ski down with a glass of Etna Rosso, a wine that’s made in this area. The grapes are grown in volcanic soil, resulting in bright and red wines. 21.What can you probably find in Taormina? A. Broken castles. B. Amazing ruins. C. Active volcanoes. D. Unique wines. 22.Why is Palermo’s architecture a mixture of various styles? A. Because Palermo is the capital city of Sicily. B. Because the authorities have a passion for varieties. C. Because it copies those of the surrounding countries. D. Because Palermo used to be occupied by many other countries. 23.Which of the following is typical of Mount Etna? A. Coast and theaters. B. Shops and restaurants. C. Volcano and wines. D. Dead bodies and grapes. B It was about 10:15 p.m. Janice Esposito got off the train at the Bellport, New York, got into her car and began driving home. She had traveled the route so many times that she almost drove 高二英语 第4 页 共10 页 automatically: a left onto Station Road, then a left on Montauk Highway, and then—bang! Out of nowhere a car crashed into Esposito’s car, pushing her backward some 100 feet onto the railroad tracks. Injured but mostly shocked by the crash and by the airbags that popped up, she got stuck in the vehicle. As it happened, Pete DiPinto was getting ready for bed when he heard the crash coming from not far outside his bedroom window. DiPinto, a volunteer firefighter, 64, never stopped to think. He grabbed a flashlight and rushed out. The first car he came upon, 2, 000 feet from his front yard, was the one that had hit Esposito. Once making sure the driver was OK, he looked around and spotted Esposito’s car straddling (跨坐) the railroad tracks. And then he heard a bell sound, which signalled a coming train. DiPinto rushed to Esposito’s car and hit on the driver’s side window. She just looked at him. “I don’t know where I am,” she said. “You’re on the railroad tracks, ” DiPinto yelled. “We have to get you off right now!” The train was traveling at a speed of 65 miles per hour toward them. The driver’s door couldn’t be opened due to the crash, so DiPinto ran to the passenger side. He threw open the door, pushed aside the airbags, seized Esposito’s arms, and pulled her toward him across the passenger seat until he finally got her out and walked her to safety as quickly as he could. Within seconds, the train crashed into the car. “It was like a Hollywood movie,” DiPinto told reporters the next day. “Last night,” said Greg Miglino Chief of the South County Ambulance, “the hero arrived in pajamas (睡衣), not in a fire truck.” 24. What led to the happening of Esposito’s accident? A. The fast speed of her car. B. A crash of another car. C. Her absence of mind while driving. D. Her unfamiliarity with the road conditions. 25. Why was the situation so dangerous? A. Esposito was to be hit by the train. B. The driver’s door couldn’t be opened. C. The two drivers were both badly injured. D. A passenger in Esposito’s car was unconscious. 26. How was Esposito saved? A. The train was made to stop. B. A fire truck was called for rescue. C. She was out of the car with DiPinto’s help. D. Some passers-by came to her assistance. 27. What is the main idea of the text? A. A train crashed into a car. B. A firefighter managed to become a hero overnight. 高二英语 第5 页 共10 页 C.
