B Agatha Christie was a mystery writer who was one of the world's top-selling authors with works like Murder on the Orient Express and The Mystery of the Blue Train. Christie was born on September 15, 1890, in Torquay, Devon, in the southwest part of England. She was educated at home by her mother, who encouraged her daughter to write. As a child, Christie enjoyed fantasy play and creating characters, and, when she was 16, she moved to Paris for a time to study the piano. Christie published her first book, The Mysterious Affair it at Styles, in 1920; the story introduced readers to one of Christie's most famous characters-Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. Readers love Christie's stories because there are lots of puzzles for them to think about as they read. Christie always wrote about places that she knew, like Torquay. But her readers are lucky that she was also a great traveler. She was married to an archaeologist( 考古学家)and travelled with him to Syria and Iraq, where they worked at archaeological "digs". In the book Murder in Mesopotamia, Poirot looks into a murder at one of these digs. Christie also travelled to Egypt, the setting for Death on the Nile. Christie was a famous play-writer as well, with works like The Hollow and Verdict. In 1952, her play The Mousetrap opened at the Ambassadors Theatre, which with more than 26, 113 showings over 63 years, held the record for the longest unbroken run in a London theatre in 2015. Additionally, several of Christie's works have become popular movies, including Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. Agatha Christie died in 1976 but her books continue to be popular today. For one week every year, lovers of her stories can go to the International Agatha Christie Festival in Torquay. People dress up in clothes from the 1920s and 1930s, like characters in her stories. "Murder" is everywhere, and visitors have a lot of fun trying to discover who the "killer" is. 24. C The American school has changed dramatically since those lively days of my boyhood, and the change seems to have made it a place where few events happen. I know this remarkable truth because every day that I met one of my children after school, I said, "How was school today?" And the child would reply, "Okay, I guess." "You guess? Didn't anything happen there today?" "Like what?" "Oh I don't know. The cause of the Civil War?" "Dad, what's Civil War?" "You remember the earthquakes that hit Egypt?" "Who's Egypt?" I have never met a father or mother who got anything other than true-false answers to after school questions. The best a parent can do today is partly-involved in the school work of a child. "Sign this test, Dad," said my youngest daughter one evening, and her left hand casually covered the top two inches of the front page. "May I see the mark first?" I replied. "It's not important. You and Mom always say it's learning, not marks, that counts." "Right, but I'd like to learn about your mark. Is it lower than a D?" "Dad, you have to remember that a mark is merely the teacher's opinion." "Is it lower than an F? Have you gotten the world's first G?" Well, it took an hour before my daughter showed me her mark on her test, and it took me a
