We spend years in school, and then get a well-paid job that we think will bring us a comfortable life. Then one day we realize that all we seem to do is work and have forgotten how to relax. There’s nothing wrong with being ambitious. The problem is that we don’t keep a good work-life balance. Here are some simple activities that can help you find more peace and balance in your life. Take a warm bath A warm bath will help you relax physically and mentally. The warm water will relax your muscles and in addition, the environment will help calm your mind and improve your mood. Go outside The fresh air and change of scenery can help you clear your mind. In addition, seeing the rest of the world helps you put things into a larger perspective. It helps you see things beyond your own busy lives. Try meditation Meditation is a powerful tool to help you relax. Basically, all you have to do is sit quietly for a few minutes and follow your breath. You don’t have to do it perfectly, and you don’t have to meditate for long periods to get the benefits. If you want more balance in your life, then make relaxation a part of your daily life. Not only will you feel better, but also you will be more productive and gain more satisfaction from your work and your personal life. 21. What is this article about? A. What a comfortable life is like. B. The best ways to enjoy yourself. C. Activities that you should do for your success. D. How to live a peaceful and balanced life. 22. Which of the following does the author agree with? A. People should be relaxed instead of working hard. B. Taking a warm bath is less useful for sportsmen. C. Going outside can broaden your mind and horizon. D. The more relaxation you have, the better you will work. 23. What does the underlined word “meditate” most probably mean? A. think B. sleep C. exercise D. breathe B I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment. Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then. My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school’s community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced. Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all. 24. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph? A. His good grades got him a good job. B. He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely. C. His views on social values are well known. D. He is content with his achievements in study. 25. Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship? A. A helper. B. A judge. C. A monitor. D. A supporter. 26. What is the greatest accomplishment for the author? A. The contribution to volunteering. B. The success in exams. C. The recovery of confidence in life. D. The work in community service. 27. Why does the author want to major in social work at university? A. To gain a well-paid job. B. To give his life a purpose. C. To meet his grandparents’ expectations. D. To better help the disadvantaged. C It can be incredibly difficult to encourage ourselves to go for a run during winter, particularly when it’s wet and windy outside. But new research has found that even a super-quick run could have great health benefits. In fact, it seems that just a 10-minute session will not only make us feel better, but could actually improve brain health, too. Now, we all know that exercise can improve mental and physical health in many ways. But when it comes to mental well-being, there’s been relatively little research done on the specific benefits of running, compared with other physical activities, such as cycling. So this was something put to the test during a recent study. Researchers from University of Tsukuba in Japan asked participants ( 参加者) to run on a treadmill (跑步机) for just 10 minutes. They then had to take a Stroop Color and Word Test which is used to measure reaction time in brain processing. Results showed there was a highest point in self
