More air conditioning, better- designed houses may help ameliorate the condition in the warmer world. However, animals will have to rely on changing their behaviour or their bodies. The most commonly observed response to climate change is a change in the timing of life cycle events like migration. A report says from 1971 to 2021, 9 out of 17 birds species have faced longer migrations, particularly Orphean Warbler (布鲁氏林莺) traveling through the Sahara Desert. Their annual voyages increase by as much as 400 kilometers. A new study published by Sara Ryding, a professor at Deakin University, shows that climate change is already changing the bodies of many animal species, giving them bigger beaks (鸟喙), ears, arms and legs. Sara’s team further finds that warm-blooded animals in hot places tend to have larger parts of body than those in cold regions. This is because such adaptations can make an animal’s surface area larger, helping it to give off extra heat. For example, when compared with their Arctic relatives, Fennec foxes, which are native to the Sahara desert, have larger ears. Worryingly, Dr. Sara pointed out the climate is changing at a pace that leaves most animal species unable to adapt quickly enough. That means climate change still may put most species at risk, threatening their survival and even affecting ecological system. It seems clear that the world of the future is going to be hotter than humans and animals are used to. It’s increasingly urgent to act now. Not only for us human beings, but for our neighbors —— animals! 4. What does the underlined word “ameliorate” in paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Cause. B. Improve. C. Achieve. D. Worsen. 5. What do we know about warm-blooded animals according to the text? A. They are less likely to migrate further. B. They have larger body parts in hot seasons. C. They adapt better and have no risk of survival. D. They make body surface bigger to release heat. 6. Why did Sara’s team do this research? A. To study typical animals’ behaviour. B. To stress the importance of protecting animals. C. To compare the adaptation of humans and animals. D. To study the influence of climate change on animals. C Kate Wilson, a 16-year-old girl from England, holds up a book and smiles. “This is Day One of my reading The Little Prince,” she says. Then the video jumps forward. “And now”, she sighs deeply, her face covered with tears, “I end up crying so much that I have to change my shirt”. This is BookTok, a collection of TikTok book-related videos on the short video platform. It has been an official reading community since April 2020. Bookworms gather on the platform to share their reading experiences by editing a video carefully at the length of less than 3 minutes. They “play”, “read” and “recommend” their favorite books, or recommend treasure writers who have never been discovered. It may sound like a simplified way to talk about books, but the most appealing point is that they can visually record videos to share the feelings of reading moment, and arouse a strong emotion, which written reviews cannot express instantly. So BookTok offers book lovers special reading experiences. It has also driven a wave of old book sales in the market. A list of bestsellers from 20 years ago has been dug out, which most readers have never heard of. In fact, many of the books like It Ends With Us should not have been forgotten. On Amazon, BookTok is so influential that it has been added into the titles of books themselves. For instance, the novel It Ends With Us: BookTok made me buy i
