So, too, was Moyenne, the island in the Seychelles (塞舍尔)that Grimshaw bought. In 1962, Grimshaw first came to the Seychelles on holiday, an archipelago (群岛) of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, only eight of which are permanently inhabited. At the time, Grimshaw was an editor, wealthy and ambitious. But Grimshaw was looking for something more than a holiday, a new direction in life, one that took him closer to nature. He dreamed about owning land in the Seychelles. At midnight on the last day of his holiday, Grimshaw signed an agreement to pay £8, 000 for Moyenne. And the island was his. But buying Moyenne would prove an easier task than taking care of it. Despite Moyenne's tiny size of 0. 099 square km, restoring the island's natural beauty was a massive task. The ignorance and rude human interference had left Grimshaw frustrated and gasping for air. Birds were noticeably absent and rats ran everywhere. Grimshaw's original goal was to protect Moyenne from overdevelopment and build an island home to live out his days. In order to protect the island's future, he set up a permanent trust(信托基 金)to protect the island and signed an agreement with the Seychelles' Ministry of Environment. In his last will, heexpressed his final wishes: “Moyenne Island is to be maintained for peace and knowledge for Seychellois and visitors from overseas of all nationalities, colors and beliefs. ” The island carries a special kind of magic: as you wander ashore, barefoot, every now and then, you may find your path blocked by one of Moyenne's giant turtles. They're in no hurry, and nor should you be as you watch them pass. Moyenne is what life should be like. 24. Why did Grimshaw buy Moyenne in 1962? A. He wanted to earn more money. B.
