B From Pennsylvania farm girl to true heroine of American microbiology (微生物学), Alice Catherine Evans (1881—1975) made one of the most medically important discoveries of the 20th century. Unable to afford college, she started her career in 1901 as an elementary school teacher. But when Cornell University offered a free class on nature to rural teachers, Alice jumped at the chance and then the course of her life (and history) changed. While taking that nature class, Alice also took a basic course in agriculture, which started her interest in bacteriology. She went on to win a scholarship to Cornell, earning her a Bachelor of Science degree in bacteriology in 1909 and then a Master of Science degree in the same field from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1910. Alice then got a job in the Dairy Division of the Bureau of Animal Industry at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Her work at the bureau involved investigating bacteria in milk and cheese. In 1918, through her pioneering research, she was able to show that drinking raw milk could pass on the bacterium, Bacillus abortus, which caused Malta fever, an infectious disease passed from farm animals to humans. As a result, Alice passionately advocated the pasteurisation (巴氏杀 菌) of milk to effectively kill this disease-causing bacterium. However, her findings and recommendations were not taken seriously by other scientists. But by the late 1920s, other scientists had eventually come to the same conclusion as Alice, and by the 1930s, the government had passed laws requiring that milk be pasteurised to prevent the disease. Unfortunately, Alice herself contracted Malta fever in 1922, as a result of her research. 高一英语 第3页(共8 页) 高一英语 第4页(共8 页) 密 封 线 内 不 得 答 题 She suffered from frequent periods of it for years because the disease never left her system. After leaving the Department of Agriculture, Alice worked for the U.S. Hygienic Laboratory, where she made valuable contributions in the field of infectious illness. In 1928, she became the first woman president of the Society of American Bacteriologists. She died in 1975 at the age of 94, and was added to the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993. 4. She developed an interest in bacteriology in her childhood. 5. What was Alice’s discovery in 1918 according to the text? A. There were bacteria in raw milk. B. Human beings were easily attacked by bacteria. C. Drinking raw milk made people catch a disease. D. Farm animals were suffering from an infectious disease. 6. How is the text mainly developed? A. By describing a process. B. By following time order. C. By discussing research experiments. D. By explaining a scientist’s behaviour. C Whenever you see a tiny, uninhabited ( 无人居住的) tropical island, you will see a coconut (椰子) tree there, standing tall. How did it get there? It made an unlikely journey through a truly tough environment. It doesn’t have a map or a GPS, nor does it have a sail or an engine, but that little coconut contains within it everything it needs to make its journey. Water is required to sprout (发芽) when the coconut gets to the new shore. On its journey it will be surrounded by water, but it can’t use that salt water, so the coconut packs its own sweet water. The coconut’s husk (外壳) provides flotation and protection through the journey and it sticks out of the water just enough to catch the wind and act like a sail. With great courage the coconut sets off for an unknown destination. Falling from the tree, it gets bounced around in the surf. Again and again it tries to get out into the open ocean, and once it does, it starts catching the wind, catching the ocean currents and it is on its way. In the middle of this vast ocean, with huge waves, the little coconut shows no fear. We build huge ships, but when a storm comes, those ships head to the nearest port until the storm passes. Not the small coconut. With each wave it goes up and with each wave it will tumble down. That storm has been harnessed to help it on its way. Then one day with a high tide it gets washed up onto a new shore. Quietly it puts down its roots and grows strong and tall. The coconut makes the most of what it has. It grasps each opportunity without hesitation and finds its niche, the place where it can be. We also have the essentials we need to find our niche. We just need to make use of our courage and find a place within us where we can be at ease with ourselves. 7. What is unusual about the coconut according to paragraph 1? A. Why it jumps into the ocean. B. How it reaches a desert island. C. How it offers guidance to sailors. D. Why it grows in an extreme environment. 8. Why is sweet water contained in the coconut? A. To feed the new coconut tree. B. To keep it balanced on the ocean. C. To attract seed-spreading animals. D. To protect its husk from salt water. 9. What does the underlined word “harnessed” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Employed. B.Overcome. C. Ignored. D. Identified. 10. What does the text intend to communicate? A. Life is not all roses. B. No way is blocked to courage. C. Opportunity seldom knocks twice. D. The longest journey begins with the first step. 第二节(共5 题;每小题2 分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为 多余选项。 You start the week with big ideas about what you’ll get done between Monday morning and Friday afternoon. 11 Some of that may be inevitable (不可避免的) if you found yourself dealing with urgent (紧急的) matters you didn’t know about when the week began.
