I didn't know how I was going to pay that bill,” Mangano says. But she had a special ability for seeing the obvious thing. She knew how hard it was to mop the floor. “I was tired, of bending down, putting my hands in dirty water, wringing (拧) out a mop,” Mangano says. “So, There's gotta be a better way.” How about a “self-wringing” mop? She designed a special tool you could twist in two directions at once, and still keep your hands clean and dry. She set out to sell it, first a few at flea markets. Then Mangano met with the media. But would couch potatoes (电视迷) buy a mop? The experts on shopping TV were less than certain. They gave it a try, and it failed Mangano was sure it would sell if they'd let her do the on-camera display. She said, “Get me on that stage, and I will sell this mop because it's a great item.” So QVC, a multinational corporation specializing in televised home shopping, took a chance on her. “I got onstage and the phones went crazy. We sold every mop in minutes.” Today she's president of Ingenious Designs, a multimillion-dollar company, and one of the stars of HSN, the Home Shopping Network. Because often people aren't as honest and open as they should be. Sometimes, people end up getting hurt. Most problems with friendships come up because people are just too selfish to care about the things that their friends need. They care about their own needs much more, which makes it hard for friendships to work. However, being selfish is part of human nature. A person is put together in order to take care of himself and his own needs, not necessarily those needs of other people. Even though being selfish is something that all humans are born with, it is something that everyone should guard against. The best thing to remember when you are a friend to anyone is that you need to treat your friend the same way as you'd like to be treated. This is wonderful advice for a friendship, because it is really the only way to make sure that you are giving your friend everything you would want to be given in a friendship. Whenever you have a question about how you should treat a friend, it is easy to find an answer simply by asking yourself what you would like your friend to do for you, if he or she is in your shoes. Even if you're always thinking about how you'd like to be treated, and your friends are too, there are issues that come up from time to time in each friendship, and it is important to understand how to deal with these issues so that you can build stronger and healthier friendships. Issues like friends getting boyfriends or girlfriends and not spending enough time with their friends, or even friends finding new friends and leaving old friends behind are issues that will probably come up with one or more of your friendships. It is important to know how to deal with these issues so that you can keep your friends and make new ones. No one wants to have a broken friendship. 8. Why may problems with friendships appear? A. One is selfish. B. One is alone. C. One is too anxious. D. One is too busy. 9. What's the first and most important thing to be other people's friend? A. Not to hurt your friends' feelings. B. To give your friends whatever you have. C. To treat your friends as fairly as possible. D. Not to think of your own needs any more. 10. What is the text mainly about? A. The Meaning of Friendships B. The Importance of Friendships C. The Advantages of Friendships D. The Problems with Friendships 11. What may follow the last paragraph of the text? A. How to make many friends. B. How to keep friends happy. C. How to treat friends correctly. D. How to solve friendship issues. 【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. D 【解析】 【分析】本文是一篇议论文,主要讲了为什么友谊会很难,并就如何维持友谊提出了一些 建议。 【8 题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段第一句“Most problems with friendships come up because people are just too selfish to care about the things that their friends need(大多数友谊问题的 出现是因为人 们太自私了,不关心他们朋友需要的东西)”可知,朋友之间出现的大多数问题是由于人 们太自私。故选A。 【9 题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段第一句“The best thing to remember when you are a friend to anyone is that you need to treat your friend the same way as you'd like to be treated(当你成为任何人的 朋友时,最好记住的是,你需要以你希望别人对待你的方式来对待你的朋友)”可知,作 者认为要成为别人的朋友,最重要的一件事就是 “尽可能公平地对待你的朋友”。故选 C。 【10 题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段的“Most problems with friendships come up because people are just too selfish
