But the Bronx Zoo was taken to court (法 庭) because it doesn’t provide the space and socialization that Happy needs. The case has restarted discussions about whether or not zoos should still be there. Grace Hipp,8 Many animals are saved from dying out thanks to zoos. This past summer, I saw the California condor(秃 鹰) at the San Diego Zoo and learned about the breeding(繁育)program there. Scores of years ago, these birds were almost wiped out in the wild. But the zoo has taken some of them in and helped them breed. Now there are many more California condors. Yanni Warrenson,12 In zoos, animals might not be provided with proper living conditions. They might also be mistreated for entertainment(娱乐). Animals can feel stressed by the cage, an unfamiliar environment, and the presence of humans. A 2003 study of 35 kinds of animals found that zoo cages were too small for some of the animals to do their daily activities. Shane Madrak,10 Zoos provide animals with food and a place that is made by copying their natural living areas. And most zoos have educational programs that help humans learn about different animals and protection efforts. Susie Slawsky,9 Animals are kept away from their natural homes, where they can run free, and put in limited areas or cages. If it's a crowded day at the zoo, some animals might get nervous or frightened. When they're in zoos, they can also lose their natural characters. If they were set free into the wild, they wouldn't know how to survive. An animal's health is more important than our entertainment. 21.What does Grace Hipp think of zoos? A.They cause animals to die out. B.They prevent animals from running free. C.They help all animals breed. D.They are beneficial to some animals. 22.Who share almost the same idea about the zoos? A.Grace Hipp and Yanni Warrenson. B.Grace Hipp and Susie Slawsky. C.Yanni Warrenson and Shane Madrak. D.Yanni Warrenson and Susie Slawsky. 23.According to Shane Madrak, what good do most zoos do? A.They provide humans with entertainment. B.They offer humans natural camping areas. C.They teach humans knowledge. D.They increase the number of visitors. B One day, Vinod Menon, head of the physics department at City College of New York, was going through his office mails. He opened a box, only to find $180,000 with a nameless letter and a return address. Having never seen so much money, he was too shocked to know what to do with it. City College of New York is one of the most-productive public university systems in the United States, and the physics department has played a key role. Three Nobel Prize winners in physics received their education there, and in 1921 Albert Einstein gave one of his first lectures at the Harlem campus. “Supposing that you are a bit curious as to why I am doing this, the reason is simple,” the letter read. It continued to explain that many years before, its generous writer had taken advantage of the excellent educational opportunity, available(可得到的)at City College to study physics, earn a master's degree, and do a long, productive, well-rewarding scientific job. The sender wished to offer the money to poor students learning physics and other sciences. The return address was to a house in Pensacola, Florida whose owners had no idea of the money. The money was first put aside, but after the two-month-long research which had found nothing that could link it to activities which are not lawful, the leaders of the college decided to keep and make good use of the money. Dr. Menon, who grew up in India, noted that the gift would provide for two fully-funded scholarships(全额 奖学金)every year for ten years, and that he would try to see it go into the hands of the students who had the fewest means-such as immigrants(移民)like him. 24.How did Vinod Menon feel at the first sight of so much money? A.Overjoyed. B.Surprised. C.Anxious. D.Calm. 25.Why does the author mention Albert Einstein in paragraph 2? A.To show Einstein was an excellent student. B.To introduce Albert Einstein to readers. C.To explain the money was from Einstein. D.To prove the college is famous. 26.What can be inferred about the sender from the letter? A.The sender is successful in some way. B.The sender lives in Florida at present. C.The sender owns a house in Pensacola. D.The sender used to do something against the law. 27.What will the college do with the money? A.Return it to its owner. B.Set up scholarships with it. C.Give it away to immigrants. D.Put it all into the bank. C Eric Carle, the author of over 70 books for children, passed away at the age of 91.Mr. Carle's lively, creative, and colorful works have been loved by children around the world. “The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is Mr. Carle's best- known book. Eric Carle was born in New York in 1929.His parents were German. As he grew up, Eric spent a lot of time with his father, who would take him out walking in nature. His father would show him small living things, explaining their life cycles and filling the young boy's head with wonder. Eric thought this helped explain why so many of his books are about nature, bugs and animals. When Eric was 6,the family moved back to Germany becau
