B “Can’t you take a picture of me?” I turned to my husband and couldn’t help asking him, at a loss why he didn’t volunteer to take my picture. We were on a long-planned, once-in-a-lifetime trip to Venice. I couldn’t stop taking pictures-263 so far. Everything was beautiful: the bright green water, the bridges topped with Venetians looking at their phones, the shining of sun or low-lying morning mist on water. I had to capture the joyful decorative beauty. My phone was packed with such pictures as I would never remove. My husband was not taking pictures. But we were walking along a particularly attractive canal(运河)in the sun. I had lots of my husband: wouldn’t it be nice to have a few of me? He helped happily, but I looked awkward. It showed 1 had to ask. Men don’t take photos. At least most men don’t seem to take phone pictures the way women do. So I wonder why. On one level, my husband is right. Holding up your phone is an imperfect and inelegant way of capturing a place or a feeling. That is the classic criticism of the digital age: We are recording, not living. He is good at being in the moment and happy to simply enjoy it. But I’m right too. Memory is unreliable: It is a story we construct for ourselves, not an objective truth. If I think about the year 2020, I remember fear, sadness and sitting at my desk seven days a week. But if 1 look through my pictures, it was all stupid family games, terrible haircuts and strange but lovely socially distant breakfasts. My phone’s camera is also a powerful corrective to my natural pessimism(悲观). My brain will probably regard 2022 as the permanent crisis, a time of global sadness and fear. But my pictures will tell a different but also true story: that perfect vegetable I grew; the sons I also grew. That is why I do it-if happiness doesn’t come naturally, sometimes you need to take its picture. 4. How did the author feel when she made the request to her husband? A. Annoyed. B. Confused. C.
