Doudna felt like she was different from her classmates, who were mostly Asians and Polynesians. "I was kind of a stupid type," she said. In high school she heard a talk by a young woman scientist on how cells turn cancerous. Her lecture attracted Doudna, and then she found herself falling in love with science. Doudna realized "that this female was clearly an excellent scientist,” she told California Magazine. 高2025 届【英语试题】 ·第5页(共12页) After high school, Doudna studied biochemistry at Pomona College in California. She worked in the lab of biochemist Sharon Panasenko, who always encouraged her.“ Team is extremely important,”she said.“And fortunately for me, I've worked with outstanding scientists at every stage of my research.” While getting her Ph.D. at Harvard, she worked with Jack Szostak, who later won a Nobel Prize in Medicine. Dounda continued to do research at the University of Colorado under Tom Cech. People who have worked with Doudna say she has a gift for finding key questions. In 2005 she turned her attention to another difficult question. She started studying unusual results which were found in the DNA of some bacteria. These genes—called CRISPR for short— help our body fight off illnesses. Cooperating(合作) with a French scientist, Doudna and her team understood how CRISPR did its job and used it to cure diseases. Doudna’s discovery has made her famous, at least in the science world. And she realizes that her success makes her a powerful example for girls who are also interested in science. "Women have natural curiosity, as do men,” she said. “And we just want to show women that they can follow their dreams in the science world.” Though many now view her as a scientific superstar, she has difficulty in seeing herself that way. “I don’t think of myself as a role model,” she said. “I still think of myself as that person back in Hawaii.” 24.
