B Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student. So at the start of my freshman year, I had an aversion to math. It wasn’t that I did not want to do well, but simply that I did not think I was able to do well. “I can’t” became my state of mind in all things related(有关的) to math. However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t” was not a choice in Mr. A’s class. Mr. A always greeted us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a great day to be alive.” It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion(热情) not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “I can’t” student. I found myself looking forward to math class, although I still hated the subject itself. Being in Mr. A’s presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed. As the year progressed, I spent increasingly more time on my homework, and I met with Mr. A weekly. My classmates began to do the same and it became “cool” to have lunch and talk with Mr. A. We did not know it at the time, but he was changing our attitudes. Though my story is not one of overnight success and I did not become a straight-A math student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly began to climb. There were hard times, of course. Difficult math questions sometimes succeeded in bringing me down, but Mr. A kept reminding me, “Kate, smile! It’s a great day to be alive!” 4. What does the underlined word “aversion” in paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Interest. B. Responsibility. C. Dislike. D. Misunderstanding. 5. What first made the author look forward to math class? A. Mr. A’s attitude. B. Her interest in math. C. Her friends’ encouragement. D. The top receivers in her class. 6. How did the author feel about her talk over lunch with Mr. A? A. It was straight. B. It was awkward. C. It was challenging. D. It was impressive. 7. How did the author change in math? A. She made some progress in math. B. She fell in deep love with math. C. She became a straight-A math student. D. She could settle difficult math questions. 高一英语 第3页(共8页) 高一英语 第4页(共8页) 密 封 线 内 不 得 答 题 C Being the “cat’s whiskers( 胡须)” is a humorous and positive way of noting that something is considered to be very near perfect. The humorous and cute images that this particular term brings to mind have something to do with the use of whiskers of the cat, including the ability to express feelings, sense changes in the environment, help with hunting, and help the cat measure distance(测量距离). Different views are held on the exact origin of the English saying “cat’s whiskers”. Some believe that the term, along with a similar “cat’s meow”, has its origin in girls’ boarding schools of the 19th century. Others believe that the term was first brought to life by Thomas Dorgan, an artist who was active during the early years of the 20th century. What is generally agreed is that by the 1920s, both “cat’s whiskers” and “cat’s meow” were often used in the United States and commonly used as a term among young people of college age. Unlike other sayings that may sometimes carry positive or negative meanings depending on the setting, “Cat’s whiskers” is always used in a positive way. An employer(雇主) may use the term to refer to an employee who produces wonderful work. Proud parents may say this to their children when they perform well in a school play or win some type of competition. In each situation, “cat’s whiskers” is used to show warm feelings for another person. While not used as commonly as before, being the “cat’s whiskers” is still generally understood to be a good thing. Younger people may sometimes have to receive an explanation of what the term means, which can lead to seeing the use of the saying in a funny way. Even those who consider the saying to be outdated and not worthy of use in public may still use the term to show love and respect in private settings. 8. The expression “cat’s whiskers” can be used to describe something that ________. A. will never happen B. needs to be measured C. causes misunderstanding D. is better than everything else 9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. How “cat’s whiskers” is used. B. When “cat’s whiskers” got popular. C. What “cat’s whiskers” meant at first. D. Why “cat’s whiskers” has different meanings. 10. How might young people nowadays feel hearing people say “cat’s whiskers”? A. Pleased. B. Excited. C. Confused. D. Angry. 第二节(共5 题;每小题2 分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从后面的选项中选出空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余项。 Picking a career is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make. 11 The most important factors in choosing a career have to do with who you are as an individual.
